The Open Group‘s Open Trusted Technology Provider Standard has received approval as an ISO/IEC International Standard for the security and integrity of commercial off-the-shelf information and communications technology products and supply chains.

The consortium said Tuesday the new ISO/IEC 20243:2015 standard works to help COTS ICT providers prevent the introduction of tampered or counterfeit product components at any stage of the product life cycle to mitigate risk.

Tampered or counterfeit components present a threat to both suppliers and customers in terms of their susceptibility to cyber attacks, the production of inferior products, loss of revenue and the exposure of intellectual property, The Open Group noted.

The group’s O-TTPS Accreditation Program will work to identify ICT providers that conform with the requirements of the new standard.

“The O-TTPS standard and accreditation program help guide and recognize trusted technology vendors… that value ‘secure by design’ best practices,” said Andras Szakal, vice president and chief technology officer of IBM‘s U.S. federal business and chair of The Open Group Trusted Technology Forum.
