Lockheed and Air Force Named Aviation Week Laureate Awardee for Auto ACAS

Lockheed-Martin-BlueLockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force-built Automated Air Collision Avoidance System has won Aviation Week’s Laureate Award.

The team composed of the office of the Under Secretary of Defense Personnel and Readiness, Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Air Force Test Center and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works developed Auto ACAS in an effort to address midair collisions and controlled flight into terrain, Lockheed said March 8.

Auto ACAS — designed to predict collisions and automatically maneuver fighter aircraft to prevent midair collision — received the awarded at an event held on March 3 in Washington, the report said.

Ed Griffin, senior program manager at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, said the company thanks the team that developed the system that aims to create nuisance free operations without interfering combat training tactics and other operations.

Recipients of the Laureate Award are chosen for accomplishments in the field of aviation, aerospace and defense, the company said.
