Mike White, mission area executive for air and missile defense at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory since 2005, has been appointed to lead the APL’s air and missile defense sector.

The 35-year APL veteran will succeed Conrad Grant, who has led the sector for 11 years before he was named as the lab’s chief engineer earlier this year, APL said Monday.

White will oversee the organization’s efforts to research, develop, test and evaluate technologies designed to help address U.S.’ air and missile defense challenges.

“Mike’s demonstrated leadership and technical competence during his career at APL have uniquely qualified him for this assignment,” said Ralph Semmel, APL director.

“He knows the sector, its people, its capabilities, and he understands the critical challenges facing our sponsors.”

White previously served as assistant executive for the precision engagement business area as well as program area manager for advanced vehicle technologies at the lab.

He holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland.
