Ambassador Eric S. Edelman will join the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments as a Distinguished Fellow. As a senior official at the State Department, DoD, White House, and as a Career Minister with three decades of Foreign Service experience, Dr. Edelman brings a wealth of experience and accomplishment in diplomacy, national security policy, and strategy to the CSBA.

As a Distinguished Fellow, Ambassador Edelman will lead projects and participate in ongoing CSBA research in the fields of national security policy, strategy, and alliances. Andrew Krepinevich, CSBA’s President, said, “We are delighted to have Ambassador Edelman join the CSBA family. An enormously talented scholar and practitioner of foreign affairs, his record of accomplishment in applying both ’hard’ and ’soft’ power, under both Democratic and Republican administrations, makes him ideally suited for CSBA’s mission of promoting thoughtful, nonpartisan
approaches to today’s challenging security problems.”

When asked about CSBA, Ambassador Edelman said “From both an academic and practicioner’s point of view, I have always been impressed with the extraordinary quality of research and writing at CSBA.  I am very pleased to be joining a very accomplished group of experts who are devoted to non-partisan, innovative thinking about national security strategy and defense investment.”

Ambassador Edelman last served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from 2005 through early 2009. His overseas posts include ambassadorships to Turkey and Finland, as well as assignments in Russia, the West Bank, and the Czech Republic.  Ambassador Edelman graduated with a B.A. in History and Government from Cornell, and a Ph.D. in U.S. Diplomatic History from Yale.  He has received the Secretary of Defense’s Medals for Distinguished Public Service (2009) and Distinguished Civilian Service (1993), as well as the State Department’s Superior Honor Award (1990 and 1996).
