Jack Hughes: Newest Member of SECAF Board of Directors

The McLean-based Small and Emerging Contractors Advisory Forum (SECAF) named Jack Hughes, former CFO of Alion Science, to its board of directors on Thursday.  Mr. Hughes is also a principal at the consulting firm, Phoenix Financial & Advisory Services. He told ExecutiveBiz.com in April he was “too young to retire.”  He kept busy in the interim period aiding Alion’s new CFO with his transition.

Aside from that, he is on the Advisory Board of Enough Is Enough, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to making the internet a better place for children and families by raising awareness of Internet pornography and sexual predators.  He helps with the business and strageic planning side of the organization, and is responsible for the planning and direction of the organization’s spending and investment strategy. He brings over thirty years of government accounting experience and his sound financial advice helps keep the organization up-and-running.

His advice for CFOs?  Don’t focus inwardly, foster relationships outside the company “In the business world, most meaningful accomplishments are team efforts. They don’t happen without lots of help from experts outside of your particular company.”  He continues, “I have had the luxury of having many relationships with other CFOs in the industry, and I have found many with deeper knowledge and broader experiences than mine. When I wasn’t quite sure what next step to take, I would often reach out to other CFOs and ask them for guidance. ”

Aside from his role in Alion’s transition and his nonprofit work? “I love to shoot pool. I had a table in my basement growing up and played most every day. I’m not as good as I used to be, but I just acquired a brand new two piece cue. Look out world!” Indeed. Jack Hughes isn’t going anywhere.
