Reps. Davis, Israel, and Kilroy Introduce $300M Health IT Bill

Reps. Artur Davis (D-Ala.), Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio) have introduced H.R. 2872, the Medicare Quality Cancer Care Demonstration Act of 2009. The bill proposes a multi-phase demonstration project for electronic cancer care; collecting medical data and creating a patient-centric program.

The bill would create a two year project that would have annual incentives of $300 million to cover cancer treatment and end-of-life care. The project would allow oncologists, organized by the Community Oncology Alliance, to upload electronic health records and other cutting-edge data which would supplement Medicare Claims to the CMS.

Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL). said “This bill would expand the availability and quality of care for millions of cancer patients and is a step in the right direction in closing the inequities in the payment system. This bill will help ensure an adequate level of both early treatment and end of life care for patients facing cancer.”

The project would also assess electronic data reporting and other forms of health IT.
