Executive Profile: Howard A. Schmidt, Cyber Coordinator

Howard Schmidt was appointed as the new cybersecurity coordinator at the White House in December 2009. Schmidt is the former president and CEOof the Information Security Forum (ISF), a position he was appointed to in 2008. In his nearly 40-year-long career in defense, law enforcement and corporate security, Schmidt has worked in various fields, including senior business, government, academic and information security management. Considered a leading expert on information security and risk management, Schmidt has testified as an expert witness in federal and military courts in the areas of computer crime, computer forensics and Internet crime.

Some of his previous roles include cybersecurity expert and adviser for the White House; chief information security officer and chief security strategist at eBay; chief security officer for Microsoft Corp; vice chair of the U.S. government’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board; supervisory special agent and director of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations Computer Forensic Lab and Computer Crime and Information Warfare Division; and head of the Computer Exploitation Team at the FBI’s National Drug Intelligence Center.

Schmidt served with the U.S. Air Force in various roles from 1967 to 1983, both in active duty and in the civil service. He served in the Arizona Air National Guard from 1989 until 1998 when he transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves as a special agent of the Criminal Investigation Division where he continues to serve.

Schmidt received his bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. He also holds an honorary doctorate degree in humane letters. In addition, Schmidt is a professor of practice at Georgia Tech, GTISC, professor of research at Idaho State University, adjunct distinguished fellow with Carnegie Mellon’s CyLab and a distinguished fellow of the Ponemon Institute
