HBGary’s Aaron Barr Discusses Experiences in Cybersecurity

As a former intelligence and special signals analyst in the U.S. Navy, Aaron Barr is  trained to calculate strategy. Thanks to these expertise, the now CEO of HBGary, Inc. has become one of the top cybersecurity specialists in the field.

In a recent interview with ExecutiveBiz, Barr gave some insight into his duties, transitions, and how his company recruits top talent.

He began his career in cybersecurity at Northrop Grumman. He explains this experience as “quite a challenge, but it was also an amazing opportunity.” Barr explained in the interview that it is here where he “got a firm understanding of the nation’s incident response and network defense capabilities.”

Barr moved from Northrop Grumman to the small-business side of cybersecurity. He explained that his duties now, at HBGary, include using his previous experience to help the company grow. “My charter, job duties right now, leveraging the experience and contacts that I have at a national level and building out a pipeline and set of resources to succeed in this market,” said Barr.

In regards to recruiting top talent for the small company, Barr told ExecutiveBiz that the company’s size, inheritance of a recognized name, and connections help them get an edge.

“I came into a company that already has existing name recognition, both in Greg Hoglund, who is very well known in the cybersecurity world and malware analysis and forensic world, as well as the company itself and the products that it develops.  So when I go to deliver services of when I talk to customers or business partners to deliver or to provide service offerings, typically most of them already recognize us and respect what we’ve done,” said Barr in the interview.

When asked if he had any advice for up-and-coming cyber professionals, Barr said, “Roll your sleeves up and get your hands dirty. In this field, you learn most by doing, even by tinkering. “
