Executive Profile: Dr. Stephen Huffman of MITRE

Dr. Stephen Huffman

Dr. Stephen Huffman is vice president and chief technology officer of MITRE Corporation. As such, he leads the company’s research and development program and develops corporate strategic technology plans. He also led the implementation of “Idea Market,” an online collaborative effort within MITRE.

Huffman joined MITRE in 1988. Since then, he has held a number of different positions within the company in support of its work with the Department of Defense. Before his current position, Huffman was vice president of the Washington Command, Control and Communications Center for MITRE and also was previously chief engineer for the company’s Enterprise Systems Engineering Office.

Earlier in his career, Huffman was director of research and development for M/A-COM Linkabit. In this position, he developed things like communications systems, error-correction coders and signals intelligence systems.

Prior, he was supervisor of the Signal Processing Section of the Center for Systems Engineering at the Research Triangle Institute. He was also an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Duke University.

He is an instructor for the Armed Forces Communications Engineering Association course for military satellite communications.

Huffman earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Duke University. He is also a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard’s Business School.

He is a member of the IEEE and the Conference Committee for the National Defense Industrial Association Science and Engineering Technology Conference. Huffman is also a founding member and chairman of the IEEE Computer Society Industry Advisory Board.
