Executive Profile: Tom Shelman of Northrop Grumman

Tom Shelman

Thomas Shelman is vice president and general manager of the civil systems division of Northrop Grumman’s information systems sector, a division that focuses on serving the public sector with systems and services. In this position, he has helped guide the company forward in an ever-changing and demanding industry.

Before assuming this role, Shelman served as vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman Information Technology’s Enterprise Applications business group. Before this, he was president of Northrop Grumman IT’s Defense group, a business responsible for providing information technology and related services to the Department of Defense, where he led operations for systems and services related to analysis, training, communications, IT infrastructure, logistics, mission support, computer simulation, and science and technology.

Earlier in his career, Shelman was vice president and chief information officer of Northrop Grumman Corporation. He led the company’s IT strategy as the corporation grew into a $30 billion operation and standardized the systems infrastructure and consolidated systems to support the corporation’s acquisition and integration activities. He also led several enterprise implementations.

Shelman was chairman of the e-Business Steering Group of the Aerospace Industries Association from 2001 to 2003. He is also an active member of the Federal Government Leadership Forum.

Shelman was also distinguished as Information Systems Executive of the Year for 2003 by the David D. Lattanze Center at Loyola College, Baltimore. In 2004, Shelman was selected as a Computerworld Premier 100 IT Leader and his Litton Industries integration initiative was among Computerworld’s 12 Best in Class. He also received the American Business Award for Best Management Information Systems/IT Executive in 2006.
