With the rise of flexible and at-home working arrangements, coworking centers have sprung up to cater to those who would like to benefit from a wider network.

With Washington, D.C.’s average commute time of more than 30 minutes, the centers may also be a convenient place for those who would rather get work done in their own neighborhood and avoid rush-hour traffic or a noisy coffee shop.

Connect 113, a coworking center in Alexandria, Va., features VOIP land lines, wi-fi, and even notary services. The company’s co-founder Billy Winburn commented: “What our members lacked previously was collaborative opportunity. People realize they work much better together than in isolation.”

He added: “It’s not uncommon for people to bike in, use the shower, change into business attire and meet in the conference room. You also see members gathering around the coffee pot networking, sharing ideas and resources.”
