Latest technology in home innovations could mean you never have to deal with switches, dials or thermostats again. Instead, “smart home” technology means all your home’s computer, lighting, security and wiring systems feed into one control console.

Some smart-home technology means the home uses sensors to detect when it is raining and can close windows; voice-recognition technology could mean you don’t have to lift a finger to change the temperature.

These new homes can also be more eco-friendly: Eragy Energy 4Store application allows homeowners to monitor and manage their home’s energy consumption right from their TV.

John Davies, ASID, director of design for Marrokal Design and Remodeling, said smart homes are no longer for billionaires, as the technology becomes more affordable and more people try to reduce their carbon footprints.

Homeowners “can access this system from anywhere in the world. They can be on a beach in Bora Bora and control their home’s lighting from their PDA,” Davies said.
