Airlines Soup Up Technology to Court Business Travelers

In attempts to tap into the recovering business travel industry, airlines across the United States are adding cutting-edge technology to their offerings.

American Airlines recently added a mobile check in option, preventing the need to print boarding passes before going to the airport or waiting in long lines. Customers at 50 domestic and international airports who choose the mobile boarding pass are sent an email with a 2-D barcode that can be scanned at security checkpoints and at American Airlines gates.

“With the addition of New York’s JFK Airport and San Juan, plus six international airports, an even greater number of our customers will be able to select the option to display their boarding pass on their mobile phone – speeding the process at the airport and eliminating the need for a paper boarding pass,” said Andrew Watson, American vice president of customer technology.

Other airlines are making moves as well: Southwest is adding wi-fi to its planes in an effort to recruit cost-conscious business travelers. Its recent acquisition of AirTran will also expand its flights to more business locations, including hubs such as Denver, Baltimore and Atlanta.
