Thinking of another cup of coffee at work today? Not only will you be more alert, a study suggests it might be linked to tumor prevention as well.

A study of 500,000 European adults conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that chemicals in coffee and tea may be linked to a lower risk of gliomas, a type of malignant brain tumor.

The study found that frequent coffee and tea drinkers – those who consumed 3.5 ounces or more per day – were a third less likely to be diagnosed with glioma, adjusting the sample to age and smoking.

Lead researcher Dominique Michaud told Reuters it is plausible that coffee or tea could affect glioma production, and it might give clues into what causes the tumors.

“This study shouldn’t be the reason that anyone changes their coffee or tea intake,” she said.
