Government agencies, private industries and even sports leagues are actively pursuing solar technology in an effort to become more environmentally friendly and save money on rising energy expenses.
The government is hopping on the solar bandwagon with last week’s announcement that the White House will install a solar water heater and panels by the end of next spring. At Kennedy Space Center in Florida, installations of a 79-kilowatt Sharp solar array are already underway.
IKEA has committed to install 150 solar installations worldwide over the next three years. The company have started in Canada, with 3,790 panels on the rooftops of three stores in Ontario.
Even sports teams and stadiums are taking advantage of the sun’s energy, including Seattle’s Qwest Field, California’s Staples Center and Arizona’s U.S. Airways Center. Many leagues such as the NHL and NBA have delivered letters to teams encouraging the use of solar technology.
“It’s fair to say that we as a league are acutely aware, and I believe other sports leagues are as well, that we all need to be responsible stewards of the planet, and having practices that encourage preservation of the environment is both good for the environment and probably smart business in the long term,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told The Associated Press.
