With expectations of a busier than usual Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year’s recession-era holiday shoppers are looking for ways to save.
Online coupons through company websites or deal sites like Groupon are among the most popular. The rate of consumers who used online coupons has risen from 19 percent in 2005 to 32 percent today, according to a study by Mintel.
To take advantage of savvy shoppers, many retailers are having early sales – even on Thanksgiving Day – or extending them throughout the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Another survey by Stax, Inc. called it an “arms race” between online retailers to target increasingly information-loaded shoppers. For those overwhelmed with competing deals, mobile app DealMap helps chart out Black Friday deals on a map.
“I don’t think retailers would tell you it was our target to start shopping earlier — that’s what consumers wanted,” Steve Nave, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart.com told The New York Times. “As broadband penetration, specifically, started to grow, customers on that day, once they were done with their Thanksgiving celebrations, they weren’t necessarily ready to go to a store, but it’s pretty easy to pull up a web page and start researching.”
