Hitting the powder this year? Siemens technology being used for winter sports may be making your trip down the mountain more environmentally friendly.

Currently, Siemens produces snow-making machines, power supply systems, pump drives and more for more than two-thirds of all ski areas worldwide. The newest energy-efficient electric ski lifts and gondolas equipment consume 40 percent less power than older models.

Not just focusing on winter sports technology, the company is looking to provide some of the infrastructure surrounding global sports events in general. In 2010, they won a combined $2 billion in contracts for the Vancouver Olympics, Shanghai Expo, World Cup in South Africa, Delhi Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Siemens has already won €600 million for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, including regional trains and power plant. The company is also upgrading medical, hotel, ski jump, utility and environmental facilities for the Ski World Cup taking place Feb. 7 – 20 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

“Our solutions make us the ideal partner for winter sports areas,” said Siemens President and CEO Peter Loscher. “We support them with the management of major projects, including providing our expertise for sustainable urban development as well as our green technologies for the ski slopes.”
