DHS Asks Raytheon to Assess Wind Turbine Problem

Homeland Security tapped Raytheon to develop a modeling tool to assess wind turbine’s effect on United States radar systems.

Research shows wind farm turbines create a Doppler effect, which can lead to radar blackout zones. Spinning turbines are mistaken for airplanes on current radar systems. The concern is terrorist might use this potential blind spot as a way to fly undetected.

Green-energy advocates fear this potential security threat may result in limiting or banning wind power all together. Last year, Caithness Energy plans for an 845-megawatt wind farm in Oregon were put on hold when the Pentagon pressured the Federal Aviation Administration to withhold the needed permit.

Balancing national security with sustainable energy may not be easy, but in this case, DHS seems to be diligently looking for alternative solutions.

DHS’ Directorate of Science and Technology, Special Projects Division, hopes Raytheon’s analysis team, which includes employees from Analytical Graphics, Inc. and Remcom, Inc., will provide a solution everyone can be happy with.

“Raytheon’s 60-year legacy in the design and manufacture of radar systems strongly qualifies us to provide an innovative solution to the problem,” said Andy Zogg, Raytheon Network Centric Systems vice president of Command and Control Systems. “With the introduction of our highly reliable tool, DHS will be able to better manage approvals of wind farm applications, allowing for clean and renewable wind energy resources.”
