In an effort to enhance studies in science, technology and engineering, Honeywell announced this week it awarded scholarships to the company’s Leadership Challenge Academy.

The technology firm partnered with the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to send 238 students from 26 countries and 27 U.S. states and territories to its leadership program at the space center in Huntsville, Ala.

The program brings students and scientists, engineers and former astronauts together in leadership building exercises. The curriculum focuses on critical thinking, integrated planning, effective communication and team building.

Scientific challenges encourage students to design, build and test their own rockets and bridge structures, and conduct DNA extraction experiments. Along with simulated space shuttle missions and jet fighter pilot training, discussion groups with professionals from Honeywell, NASA, Hudson Alpha, and University of Alabama in Huntsville round out the program.

Scholarships based on academic achievement and community involvement are awarded to junior- and senior-level high school children of full-time Honeywell employees. The program is partially funded by Honeywell employees.

“We’re thrilled to send this impressive group of students to the Leadership Challenge Academy,” said Tom Buckmaster, president of Honeywell Hometown Solutions. “The program engages students in meaningful science and math based challenges, and introduces them to the many opportunities for rewarding careers. The dedication and creativity of the parents of these exceptional students helps make Honeywell one of the worlds leading technology companies.”
