Northrop Grumman and Gamesa Technology Corp. launched this week the Offshore Wind Technology Center.

The joint venture will develop the next generation of offshore wind systems. Development of North America’s first offshore wind turbine farm is set to begin late next year.

The two companies forged the alliance last October to launch Gamesa’s first G11X-5.0 MW offshore prototype in the United States. A team of engineers will oversee the design and development of the wind turbine and testing of the prototypes.

Dirk Matthys, chairman and CEO of Gamesa North America, said the partnership ensures turbine reliability, low maintenance and minimal cost through integrated design and logistics support.

“Today represents a new chapter in our company’s long and distinguished history,” said Matt Mulherin, vice president and general manager for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. “We are very proud to be teamed with such an innovative and highly respected industry leader like Gamesa, and we look forward to bringing our 125 years of engineering, design and manufacturing expertise to this project.”

Gamesa designs, manufactures, installs and maintains wind turbines, with more than 20,000 MW installed in 30 countries on four continents
