Siemens Energy, Inc., announced this week Northeast Utilities awarded it a contract to install 115 kV and 345 kV gas-insulated transmission lines in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
The award is part of the Greater Springfield Reliability Project, which seeks to solve transmission system overload issues, and to meet federal and regional reliability standards. Siemens will provide the project engineering, design and assembly expertise for its gas-insulated transmission lines technology.
Siemens plans to build five circuits at two air-insulated substations. Siemens’ gas-insulated transmission lines are fitted with elbows and angle adjustment components to simplify the foundation design, uses standard precast trenches, and minimizes cost.
Gas-insulated transmission lines run underground and connect above ground. They transmit high-current amps on a single conductor. The current system needs two or three cables. Siemens claims gas-insulated transmission lines lower losses, magnetic fields and risks of burning compared to cables or overhead lines.
