Sprint Breezes Back On EPA’s Green Company List

Sprint Nextel’s use of wind power blew the company on to the EPA’s Fortune 500 green power partner list.

Ranked 19 out of 67 qualifying companies, Sprint stands alone as the only wireless carrier on the list.

The EPA’s green power partnership encourages green energy purchases such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydropower. Companies meet EPA requirements by generating renewable energy on-site or purchasing from utilities.

In 2008, Sprint announced plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 15 percent, and increase renewable energy use 10 percent by 2017. In step with that agenda, Sprint purchases wind power to provide more than 90 percent of total electric energy used at its headquarters in Overland Park, Kan.

“We are proud to again be the only wireless communications company named on the EPA’s Green Power Partners list,” Sprint Vice President of Procurement and Real Estate Gene Agee said.  “We continue to explore opportunities to implement new and better ways to reduce our use of nonrenewable resources and our overall carbon footprint.”

Sprint’s reputation as an employee and eco-friendly company is well known. Its headquarter campus was designed with health in mind. Parking garages were placed away from covered, walkway-linked buildings, and conference rooms and cafeterias are scattered throughout the complex. The campus also includes a fitness center, gymnasium and jogging trails.
