Verizon announced this week the federal government awarded the communications company the Personal Identity Verification Interoperable certification.

The certification is in recognition of Verizon’s Identity Managed Service offering, and is issued by the Federal PKI Policy Authority. Solutions earning the certification must prove it improves security, reduces fraud and protects privacy.

“Government agencies and interoperable organizations can now use Verizon’s identity services with the high assurance that comes with the PIV-I certification,” said Peter Tippett, vice president of security and industry solutions for Verizon. “We believe this solution will help organizations reduce the complexity and increase the speed of their credentialing implementations, as well as provide trust in those credentials.”

PIV-I details objectives and security protocols for government and contracting personnel. Those protocols allow for interoperability across the system. Verizon’s Identity Managed Service Offering now meets those protocols, and supports the federal system’s identity and credential management, biometric input and other validation services.

The Identity Managed Service Offering is cloud-based, and one of many security services Verizon offers. It is the only credentialing solution currently certified as PIV-I approved.
