Facebook is bringing presidential knowledge to its communications team, hiring former Clinton White House spokesman Joe Lockhart to focus on the social network’s federal policy.
Lockhart, who served as press secretary during Clinton’s second term, will act as vice president of global communications in his new position. He will report to to Elliott Schrage, VP of global communications, marketing and public policy.
Lockhart’s “arrival brings new skills and greater depth to our incredibly busy team,” Schrage said.
“His experience building and running a press office at the White House gives him particular appreciation for the demands of a global 24-hour news cycle and the challenges of responding effectively to intense scrutiny,” he added.
Facebook is adding several federal regulators to its team as the company continues its social expansion and aims to improve its communications staff in the wake of this move. Joel Kaplan, former George W. Bush deputy chief of staff, was hired last month to head Facebook’s D.C. federal lobbying and policy shop, an office that has expanded to 12 current staff members from one in 2007.
