Graduating with a degree in classics to the worlds of corporate communications, law and finance, GeoEye President and CEO Matthew O’Connell brings more than 25 years of experience in communications management and finance to his current role.
He first joined the commercial remote sensing industry in 2001 as CEO of GeoEye’s predecessor, ORBIMAGE. ORBIMAGE acquired Space Imaging to form GeoEye, Inc. in January 2006, where O’Connell has remained since.
Much of O’Connell’s background lies in the realm of corporate communications. Before joining ORBIMAGE, O’Connell was a managing director at Crest Advisors, a New York-based private merchant bank that invested in and advised communications companies. He also worked as senior vice president of legal and business affairs for Sony Worldwide Networks, a division of Sony Corporation specializing in radio and Internet programming, as well as senior vice president and general counsel of Osborn Communications Corporation. He began his career as a lawyer on Wall Street, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate finance.
O’Connell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Trinity College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and went on to receive a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School. He currently serves on the National Geospatial Advisory Committee of the Interior Department and on The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advisory Committee on Commercial Remote Sensing.
He has been honored with numerous industry awards, including the Industry Leader award from the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation’s board of directors and being named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst and Young for Communications in the Washington, D.C., region in 2007.
