Global security provider Northrop Grumman has selected five winners from a pool of 80 applicants to receive the company’s 2011 NextGen Engineers Scholarships, a student competition sponsored by Northrop Grumman’s Battle Management and Engagement Systems Division. This year’s winners are:

*Daniel Bach of Syosset High School, Syosset, N.Y.

*Laura D’Aquila of Cold Spring Harbor High School, Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.

*Matthew Gus of Lynbrook High School, Hewlett, N.Y.

*Karl Krehbiel of West Shore High School, Satellite Beach, Fla.

*Arthur Phidd of Baldwin High School, Baldwin, N.Y.

Each of the five winners will receive $10,000 toward his or her four-year college education, or $2,500 per year over four years. They will also be eligible for placement in paid internships at the local facility for three summers during the course of their undergraduate educations. Including the salaries each student will make working, the total value of each scholarship could reach $30,000.

“Having the opportunity to be mentored by some of the best engineers in the world is a priceless experience for these students,” said Patricia McMahon, sector vice president and general manager, battle management and engagement systems division. “Our program brings together people of many ages with an incredibility diverse set of ideas and thoughts to create an incredibly rich experience for all.”

The NextGen Engineers competition is now in its sixth year and was open to qualifying students who lived in Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York, Brevard County, Fla., and Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland – areas in which the company’s aerospace systems sector has major facilities. The children of Northrop Grumman employees were also eligible.
