NASA has awarded $3 million to ATK, Boeing and four other companies for concept studies during the first phase of the space agency’s “Ride the Light” project.

The “Ride the Light” concept seeks to supply aerospace vehicles with external power on demand. The concept uses beamed power and propulsion, produced by sources such as lasers and microwave energy.

“NASA’s Game Changing Technology Development program uses a rolling selection process to mature new, potentially transformative technologies from low to moderate technology readiness levels — from the edge of reality to a test article ready for the rigors of the lab,” said Michael Gazarik, NASA’s space technology director.
