Cartwright served four years as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the nation’s second-highest military officer. Before his appointment to the Joint Chiefs, Cartwright was the commander of the U.S. Strategic Command.

Cartwright, a Rockford, Ill. native, attended the University of Iowa and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He flew the F-4 Phantom, OA-4 Skyhawk and F/A-18 Hornet. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff College and earned a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College. He also completed a fellowship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
