GeoEye Commended for Efforts in Hurricane Irene

GeoEye Inc. has received an award from the Virginia State Police’s Criminal Intelligence Division for their assistance in aiding with Hurricane Irene.

Throughout Irene, GeoEye, a leader in high resolution satellite imagery, in conjunction with the Virginia Fusion Center (a branch of the state police), worked to produce high-probability predictions about the storm to assist officials in the decision making and aid/response process.

In addition, the team has continued their partnership, applying geospatial predictive analytics to public safety and homeland security operations as part of a Department of Homeland Security, Research and Development project.

“GeoEye’s ability to secure immediate imagery following Hurricane Irene significantly assisted the Commonwealth with its response efforts and with assessing the threat of flooding associated with the Blackwater River and other vulnerable areas,” said Marla Graff Decker, Virginia secretary of public safety.
