Profile: David Cotton, TASC Cyber Group VP

David Cotton, TASC

As TASC‘s cyber group vice president, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. David Cotton is responsible for driving cyber-related business growth as well as leading the continuous development of the company’s cyber capabilities.

Prior to joining TASC’s team (our sister site GovCon Wire covered the appointment), Cotton served for more than 29 years in the Air Force. His most recent position was that of director of cyberspace operations, where he led a 44,000-person workforce and was responsible for oversight of both military and civilian operations.

He was responsible for handling the enhancements made to the operations center used for command and control of multinational air forces in both Afghanistan and Iraq following the 9/11 attacks.

Cotton also previously acted as the senior information assurance officer, providing oversight of the Air Force information assurance program so that all work is compliant with Defense Department, legislative and joint information assurance policy.

He also was the Air Force’s chief strategist, having handled the development of information technology efficiencies spanning the Future Years Defense Program and integration into the Secretary of Defense’s IT consolidation initiative.

In addition, Cotton also handled execution of two U.S. and NATO cyber interoperability demonstrations while he was the director of communications for the European Command.

Throughout his career, he has held various communications positions, some of which include serving as Director of Command, Control, Communications and Computer Systems for Joint Task Force-Southwest Asia during Operation Enduring Freedom, commander of two communications squadrons as well as the 5th Combat Communications Group.

Cotton first joined the Air Force in 1982 through the ROTC program at Iowa State University. He is a native of Iowa and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Iowa State. He holds a master’s degrees in computer data and personnel management, and in strategic studies.
