Contractors’ Work Recognized with Power Engineering Award

At a recent awards ceremony, Power Engineering magazine recognized the top projects of the year. The projects has to represent significant facilities and technologies in areas of coal-fired, gas-fired and renewable energy.

The 2011 Projects of the Year Award went to three winners and six honorable mentions. Awarded projects featured contracting firms such as CH2M Hill and URS, among others.

CH2M Hill completed work for the project that received the Best Gas-Fired Project of 2011 recognition: the Empire Generating Project, owned by Empire Generating Co. LLC in Rensselaer, N.Y.

According to the magazine release on the awards, CH2M Hill completed the $700 million project on August 31, 2010 and provided power island equipment to the plant, which is a natural gas fired combined-cycle power plant.

The power island equipment installation began in 2009. It has installed noise mitigation and water-saving measures as well as a water treatment facility.

The release indicated that the plant is “designed to provide peaking power up to 635 MW, has cogeneration capability and is capable of running on low sulfur fuel oil.”

URS took part in a project that received an honorable mention: the Hudson Unit 2 Back End Technology Project, owned by PSEG Fossil LLC in Jersey City, N.J.

The company was selected for construction management services, procurement support and engineering services for the installation of emissions control technology in Unit 2 at the Hudson Plant.

The project aim was to reduce mercury, NOx, SO2 and particulate matter and was completed in December 2010. The company began work in April 2009 and, “engineering was 60 percent complete and construction was 20 percent complete with only 20 months to go before the completion date,” said the report.

Included in the project was air heater and equipment modifications to reduce emissions. In addition, the company repaired corroded steel columns, base plates and anchor bolts.
