The company’s Quality Tycoon game won the “Best of show” award for 2011 at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference Serious Games Showcase and Challenge.
The game, which is available on the company’s website, challenges players to steer an aerospace company through development. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the Oregon Trail game where each decision effectively affects the company’s growth. The game simulates business shifts in the industry over the past 70 years.
“In real life, choices lead to consequences, but often the results aren’t apparent for a long time. Quality Tycoon condenses time, so players can see for themselves how quality is integral to an enterprise’s culture,” said Christopher Cool, sector vice president of quality, safety and mission assurance at Northrop Grumman aerospace systems.
The company has a library of serious games it uses for events such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics outreach. Northrop Grumman is also conducting research with the U.S. Air Force Research Lab and California State University Long Beach on improving multitasking capability through video game play, said the company.
