URS Corp. has joined Northrop Grumman and SAIC in sponsoring the Air Force Association‘s national high school cyber defense competition, the AFA announced Monday.

The CyberPatriot competition first took place in 2009 and encourages students to explore and use science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The AFA says students gain hands-on experience on how to defend computer systems from cyber threats.

“URS recognizes the importance of motivating today’s youth to pursue careers in STEM-related fields,” said Randall Wotring, president of federal services at URS. “As an engineering and technical services firm, we understand the importance of training and developing the next generation of skilled and technical professionals.”

The current CyberPatriot competition started in October 2011. The AFA said more than 1,000 teams in the U.S. and five in Canada participate.
