Dell Names John Swainson Software Group President

Dell has appointed John Swainson president of the company’s software group as of March 5, the company announced Thursday.

Swainson will report to Dell Chairman and CEO Michael Dell.

Swainson most recently served as a senior adviser to private equity firm Silver Lake. He also was director and CEO of software firm CA Inc., now known as CA Technologies, from 2005 to 2009.

Swainson also worked at IBM for more than 26 years, holding management positions in the U.S. and Canada.

Swainson founded IBM’s application integration middleware division in 1997 and served as general manager for seven years. He and his team developed IBM’s WebSphere family of middleware products and the Eclipse open source tools project.
