Executive Profile: Joseph Greaney, Northrop Grumman Information Systems VP of Essex Business Group

Joseph Greaney is the Vice President of the Essex business unit, a $600M+ organization within the Cyber Intelligence Division of Northrop Grumman Information Systems (NGIS), where he is responsible for the performance of several classified programs and leading NGC’s Agile Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Enterprise mission area.  The business unit provides systems and software integration, agile engineeering, information technology architecture and support, analytics, and specialized technical services for the intelligence community. Mr. Greaney is responsible for program performance, the development of a large technical workforce, as well as growing the business to sustain Northrop Grummans leadership position in the Cyber and SIGINT community.

Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Mr. Greaney was Sr. Vice President and  Deputy Business Unit General Manager for SAIC’s Intelligence and Information Solutions Business Unit, a $500M organization with over 1900 employees.  Responsibilities included chief operating officer of the business unit with primary emphasis on program execution, optimizing internal operations, as well as new business development. The Business Unit consisted of several programs in the areas of Signals Processing and Analysis, Information Assurance, Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Information Operations. Previous positions held at SAIC include Operations Manager, Division Manager, Program Manager, and Sr. Engineer.

Mr. Greaney’s engineering experience is primarily in Data Communications, Signal Processing, and Information Security.  He has performed integration of large Signal Processing Systems as well as integration of very large Local Area Networks. He has performed detailed equipment design of LAN terminal servers, Network Protocol Software, Modems, Voice Grade Channel Processing equipment, and Cryptographic equipment.  He has conducted research studies of telecommunications access protocol efficiency and network traffic analysis. He has performed reliability studies of large distributed systems as well as performance analysis of computer and communication systems.
Before joining SAIC in 1994, Mr. Greaney worked at GTE Government Systems, National Systems Center,  as a Systems Engineer, a Program Manager and finally as the Department Manager of  Telecommunications and Signal Processing.  He had overall performance responsibility for all NSC programs within these technical disciplines. 

Prior to GTE Government Systems, he worked at LANEX Corporation, a small business that designed Local Area Network products and software.  He was the lead engineer for all LAN product development and LAN/Communications related contracts. Until 1984, he was a Senior Engineer and Program Manager for DoD signal processing related programs at IDEAS, Inc.

Joe is a Sr. member of the IEEE and he is a board member of the AFCEA Central Maryland Chapter. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1978, a master’s degree in electrical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1986, and he completed the Advanced Management Program from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 2005.  Joe, and his wife Tracy and their three children reside in Brookeville, Maryland. His hobbies include golf, skiing, and coaching youth sports.
