Lockheed Martin Commemorates Centennial Founding of Glenn L. Martin Co.; Bob Stevens Comments

Bob Stevens, Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin Corp. is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its predecessor company, Glenn L. Martin Co. being founded, it announced Thursday.

Bob Stevens, Lockheed Martin Chairman and CEO, hailed Glenn L. Martin as a visionary and said the  imagination, innovation and integrity which the founder imparted to the company are channeled through Lockheed Martin’s current 120,000 employees.

Glenn L. Martin, a “barnstorming” aviator who set two world records with his Model 12 seaplane invention, founded the company on Aug. 16, 1912 in Los Angeles, Calif.

The aviation pioneer’s inventions include the first packed parachute, the MB-2 bomber, B-10 and B-26 Marauder planes, as well as America’s first operational cruise missile, the Matador.

The Glenn Martin Co. became Martin Marietta in 1995 and began producing and developing  missile and rocket technologies.

Martin Marietta also originated the Zero Defects quality program for aerospace manufacturing.

Later in 1995, Martin Marietta merged with Lockheed Corp., an aerospace company founded by Allan and Malcolm Lockheed in 1912, thereby taking on a new name, Lockheed Martin Corp.
