Oceus CEO Doug Smith Testifies to House Subpanel on 4G Tech, Spectrum

Doug Smith

Oceus Networks CEO Doug Smith testified during a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing Thursday on the role of commercial-off-the-shelf technology, particularly wireless broadband, in helping fulfill growing broadband communications requirements within the military and other federal agencies.

During written remarks before the subcommittee on communications and technology, Smith described his company’s role in helping defense and federal customers implement the same type of 4G long term evolution technology commercial customers use.

“The mobile broadband revolution that is transforming consumers’ daily lives has profound implications for government users, presenting both opportunities and challenges,” he told the subcommittee.

Oceus and the Navy are building a ship-based 4G network using the company’s Xiphos 4G LTE system.

In a recent interview with ExecutiveBiz, Oceus Chief Growth Officer Cal Shintani highlighted his company’s role in that project, saying this is the first-ever 4G LTE deployment for the defense community (click here to read the full executive spotlight).

Using commercial technology such as 4G LTE reduces the amount of time between development and deployment and helps facilitate interoperability and sharing between the government and the private sector, Smith told lawmakers.

Smith also addressed the spectrum crunch for both commercial and government users, specifically the possibility of the government and commercial sectors sharing spectrum.

Sharing must be viewed as a two-way street, he said, for it to benefit everyone with federal users needing potential access to commercial spectrum.

The company is studying sharing ideas recently recommended to President Obama by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Smith said.
