Bechtel‘s Savannah River Remediation has received the U.S. Energy Department‘s voluntary protection program‘s Star of Excellence award.

According to a Bechtel statement, the award is for the remediation programs that ensure the health and safety of workers at the department’s site at the Savannah River in South Carolina.

Dave Olson, president and project manager of the Savannah River Remediation, said that this recognition shows that a safety culture is embraced by the company’s employees who “continue to adhere to the VPP principles in the areas of management leadership, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training.”

Bechtel is part of SRR, the liquid waste contractor responsible for the remediation of radioactive waste at the former nuclear weapons production facility.

This is the third award for the SRR, which became SRS’s liquid waste contractor in 2009.
