Google has appointed former acting Energy Undersecretary Arun Majumdar to help direct energy initiatives for the search giant’s charitable arm.

Matthew Stepka, vice president for Google.org, announced the appointment in a blog post and said Majumdar will also advise the company on its broader energy strategy.

Majumdar is also the founding director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy, known as ARPA-E, where he identified and supported development of new energy technologies, Stepka wrote.

In May, Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced Majumdar would leave the government after two years as head of DOE’s research arm (click over to ExecutiveGov for more on who succeeded Majumdar).

Majumdar also worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California at Berkeley in areas involvingh energy conversion, transport and storage.

In 2005, he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
