Schafer Corp. has appointed retired Air Force Gen. Kevin Chilton, a former commander of U.S. Strategic Command and Air Force Space Command, to the board of directors.

The company said he served 34 years in the Air Force and 11 years as a NASA astronaut, where he commanded a mission for Space Shuttle Atlantis and served as deputy program manager for operations for the International Space Station program.

He also led the Defense Department‘s operations in space and cyberspace, including responsibility for Cyber Command.

Chilton led Air Force Space Command for one year prior to leading Strategic Command and held other command assignments  at the wing, numbered air force, major command and unified combatant command levels.

Schafer said he has also served as a test pilot for the F-4 and F-15 programs and flew operational assignments in the R-4C and F-15.
