Intel Hosting Natl HS Science Research Competition; Wendy Hawkins Comments

IntelLogoIntel Corp. is sponsoring nationwide competition for high school seniors to help answer science-related questions by researching and developing skills to solve problems.

The company said 40 of the 300 semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, run by the Society for Science & the Public, will move onto the finals in Washington.

The society will announce the list of finalists Jan. 23, the company said.

At stake in the finals is a $100,000 grand prize and the remaining top 10 competitors will receive $305,000 in total awards.

“Each year, the Intel Science Talent Search honors high school seniors poised to lead in U.S. scientific innovation,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “This year, these young scientists are tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges in topics ranging from environmental conservation solutions to medical treatments.”

“The 300 Intel Science Talent Search 2013 semifinalists have distinguished themselves as the nation’s top, young scientists dedicated to independent hands-on research in the science, technology, engineering and math fields,” said Elizabeth Marincola, president of the society. “Together with Intel, we congratulate these exceptional students, look forward to watching their future progress, and commend the mentors, teachers, schools, parents and communities that have contributed to their success.”

The company said more than 146,000 students from high schools in 50 states, the District of Columbia and territories submitted research projects for the competition.

Research areas include biochemistry, materials science, physics, mathematics, engineering, behavioral science, medicine and health.
