Bennett previously served as chairman since 2011.
“The board and I agree that having an independent director serve as the non executive chairman is in the best interests of our shareholders,” said Bennett. “Separating the positions of chairman and CEO allows me to focus on executing the company’s strategic plan and managing the company’s operations and performance.”
“As CEO, Steve has a vision for where he wants to take the company and help it reach its fullest potential,” Schulman said. “I look forward to working with him, the board, and everyone at Symantec.”
Since August 2010, Schulman has served as president of American Express’ enterprise growth group and previously served as president of Sprint’s PrePaid group and CEO of Virgin Mobile USA, until that company’s acquisition by Sprint in fall 2009.
Between May 2000 and May 2001, Schulman served as president and CEO at Priceline after previously holding the president and chief operating officer titles from July 1999.
Before joining Priceline, Schulman served as president of AT&T’s consumer markets division and served on its operations group, which Symantec says is AT&T’s most senior executive body.
