Time Magazine Picks Lockheed Team’s Fish Pen for 2012 ‘Best Inventions’ List; Gerry Fasano Comments

LockheedLogoTime magazine has selected a mobile fish pen built by a team including Lockheed Martin for the magazine’s list of the top 25 inventions in 2012.

Mobile fish cages, or aquafarms, are intended to help produce seafood in countries without supply of farmland or fresh water, according to Lockheed.

The company worked with Kampachi Farms of Hawaii and the Illinois Soybean Association to build the pen, which uses Lockheed’s command and control and situational awareness software to move over ocean surfaces at depths of up to 12,000 feet.

Gerry Fasano, president of Lockheed’s information systems and global solutions-defense product line, said the company aimed to apply defense technology and software in helping build the pen.

Neil Anthony Sims, co-founder and CEO of Kampachi Farms, said the company is combining the pen with feeds, proteins and oils as part of its goal to help feed 9 billion people worldwide.

During beta-trials, the team tested fingerlings raised from wild broodstock in land-based hatcheries with the goal of having farmed and wild fish with similar genetics.

Fish reached harvest size within five months, Lockheed said.
