Lockheed Makes Maryland STEAM Program Donation; Vicki Schmanske Comments

LockheedLogoGCELockheed Martin has contributed $10,000 to Bowie State University’s The Maryland Center to help promote active student participation in the nonprofit organization’s science, technology, engineering, arts and math programs.

The foundation will use the funds to develop strategies for retaining, recruiting and graduating students in the STEAM fields, Lockheed said Thursday.

Funding also is intended to help kick-start a career pathways program under the Obama administration’s Educate to Innovate initiative, or EI2, for under-represented pupils of the community.

“Lockheed Martin has been supporting technology innovation in all academic levels within the Prince George’s County, Md., education system for more than a decade,” said Vicki Schmanske, Lockheed vice president for information technology and security solutions.

“We are committed to educating and inspiring tomorrow’s technologists, scientists, engineers and mathematicians,” she added.

“The university’s partnership with Lockheed Martin represents a shared commitment to preparing students, especially in Prince George’s County, for workforce opportunities in STEAM-related disciplines,” said Mickey Burnim, BSU president.
