Community outreach efforts by companies and their top executives also prominently feature on the site, including initiatives aimed to promote the importance of the STEM education fields to the nation’s future workforce.
Earlier this month, Lockheed Martin and Cisco announced a partnership to build a cloud computing environment for Prince George’s County, Md. high school teachers to obtain resources for teaching STEM skills to students.
That 90-day pilot project will also aim to put multimedia recordings in the classroom and give students a simulation of what a future career at Lockheed could look like.
Cisco also announced a second STEM initiative at the White House this month, where the company and several other technology giants will start a new STEM mentoring program for students in grades kindergarten through high school.
John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO, said the company joins the US2020 initiative as all sectors will require 90 percent of their workforce to have technology skills within two years.
Participating companies will have the employees serve as STEM mentors for 20 hours a year.
For the 11th straight year, Lockheed hosted an exercise that pits military academy students against National Security Agency workers to test the students’ cybersecurity skills.
Darrell Durst, vice president of cyber solutions, said the students inspire the company through their efforts to match the skills of NSA veterans.
U.S. and Canadian academies participated in the exercise, which has the students connect to Lockheed’s Hanover, Md. facility via a private network.
