Symantec Security Portfolio Receives Govt Approval; John Bordwine Comments

SymantecLogoTwo sets of Symantec products have been certified by the governments of China and Russia as complying with government regulations and standards in those countries.

Russia’s Federal Service for Technical and Export Control certified version 12.1 of Symantec’s Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition and China’s Ministry of Public Security certified a separate security suite, Symantec said Wednesday.

The company also holds certification from Russia for Symantec Data Loss Prevention, Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Control Compliance Suite.

China approved a set of products including including Norton PC Checkup, Control Compliance Suite Vulnerability Manager, Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange, Protection Engine and Systems Protection.

The certifications are intended to help enterprises meet security requirements by using accredited products that comply with data protection laws, the company added.

“In today’s world it is essential that solutions are put in place to protect the increasing amount of data that is stored in IT environments,” said John Bordwine, chief technology officer of Symantec’s global public sector organization.

Under the Data Protection Act of Russia, organizations handling  confidential data require a technical conditions certificate, under which companies have their products evaluated to ensure they comply with technical conditions.

Symantec says enterprises keeping classified data need a non-disclosed functionality certificate, which checks the source code and identifies undeclared product capabilities such as buffer overflows, debug passwords and covert channels.
