Northrop Adds USC to Its Cybersecurity Research Consortium; Mike Papay Comments

NorthropLogoNorthrop Grumman Corp. has chosen the University of Southern California to collaborate with the company’s cybersecurity research consortium in an effort to help combat current and emerging cyber threats.

USC will bring its big data, computer science and informatics capabilities to the consortium to develop offerings together with existing members Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Purdue University, according to a Northrop Grumman statement.

Northrop Grumman’s vice president and chief information security officer, said the company and USC would aim to combine their respective global threat knowledge and big data and analytics research to help customers address issues with their network data flow and understand its impact on their mission.

The consortium started in December 2009 with goals to enable cybersecurity scientists to collaborate on and research cyberspace, supply chain management and critical infrastructure networks.

Member universities integrate research, share data and best practices, forge academic programs including new curricula and case studies, as well as help students and the community learn about securing infrastructures.

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering will aim to research securing big data storage and processing on distributed systems using its Information Sciences Institute, Northrop Grumman said.

“Finding solutions in this very important area, which is also one of the grand challenges of engineering, will benefit both the public and the private sectors. Cybersecurity challenges are intertwined with big data issues,” said Yannis C. Yortsos, dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
