Charles Clancy has been selected by the Virginia Tech board of visitors as the first L-3 Communications cyber faculty fellow of electrical and computer engineering.

L-3’s national security solutions group created the fellowship in 2011 to support the university’s engineering faculty, Virginia Tech said Thursday.

Clancy currently serves as director of the university’s Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and as an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

He studies cloud and wireless communications with the goal of finding ways to detect, attribute and mitigate cyber threats.

Clancy has managed research projects for the federal government and worked on telecommunications policy and engineering in developing nations.

He has also authored seven invited conference papers, 19 peer-reviewed journals and 52 peer-reviewed workshop and conference publications.
