Marillyn Hewson, president and CEO at Lockheed Martin, addressed the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics in Washington Tuesday to highlight ways the aviation sector can help promote the Federal Aviation Administration‘s NextGen initiative.

Hewson told attendees industry leaders must make a business case to Congress for NextGen as lawmakers have difficult fiscal choices to make, Lockheed said Wednesday.

She also recommended industry set and meet delivery goals, adapt and be open to changes and focus primarily on system performance and passenger safety.

“Air transport is a major driver of global commerce,” Hewson said.

“Every pound of fuel we can save, every minute of wait time we can reduce, and every additional flight we can schedule will boost everything from trade to tourism,” she added.

The goal of the FAA’s NextGen program is to move the National Airspace System from a ground-based air traffic control system to a satellite-based air traffic management system.
