Accenture to Manage Biometrics Program in India

accenture_ExecutiveBizAccenture has won a contract to provide a state in India with information technology services as part of a government modernization drive, This Day reported Thursday.

Emma Okonji writes the undertaking aims to simplify the transition to a biometric system called Aadhaar that federal agencies in the state of Punjab use to collect, store and update citizen information.

The paper says Accenture will modify existing facilities and create new tools for public access intended to allow direct and secure transactions at lower operational costs.

The company also hopes to raise awareness about Aadhaar’s goals and assist Punjab authorities on policy changes and legal matters, This Day said.

Okonji reports the Unique Identification Authority of India uses unique 12-digit numbers for its records in the Aadhaar based on a concept used in different types of biometric platforms.

Parminder Singh, state Department of Food and Civil Supplies joint secretary and registrar, said the system was developed to automate and speed up processes needed to verify and authenticate papers of residents.
